Farmers Participatory Seed Production
North eastern Karnataka is popularly known as pulse bowl of Karnataka, where red gram is one of the major pulse grown at an area of 5.36 lakh ha under dry land area.

The major lacuna is the non-availability of the varieties which are resistance/tolerance to the wild disease and in the field conditions some patches of the land has been affected it can clearly visible as the dry patches in the red gram field.

ISAP promoted FPO, Dayasagar Horticulture Farmers Producer Company Limited(DHFPCL), has addressed this problem by the production and supply of good quality TS3R seeds of Red Gram to the farming community in large scale by the use of “Farmers Participatory Seed Production” approach where the foundation seeds are distributed to the farmers. DHFPCL engaged Karnataka State Seed Certification agency for certification of these seeds. Seed production was carried out under the guidance of Karnataka State Seed Certification agency. Farmers now can sell this certified seeds in forthcoming season to their fellow farmers or other interested parties.

In addition to this, ISAP has been instrumental in empowering the FPOs by providing trainings on post-harvest management and market linkages. This year, above FPO supplied5450 quintal of red gramto NAFED under Price Support Scheme (PSS). FPO aggregated this produce from its 554 member farmers.

Unemployment Ended through skilling

The following story is the journey of a trainee, Vikas Kumar s/o IndralalKacher, who is 10th passed and hails from a very small village, Mangaon of Rewa district. He was not being able to earn a dignified living for himself and his family before the training. The biggest hurdle for him was that he had no direction as to what to pursue and what to do with his life.

A while ago, he learned about John Deere Tractor Training Program and took an appropriate decision to join it and has been proudly associated with ISAP since. Initially, he joined the program just for fun and to gain new experience but gradually his interest grew for machines and he took the program with seriousness when he was facilitated by modern infrastructure, the course module, interesting learning sessions and hands on practical classes. After mid-session of 45days, he became a front line learner and participated in the program very well.

During mobilization in his village, he came to know about the John Deere Tractor Training Program. Upon hearing about the program, his village-mates started showing interest and enrolled themselves in the program. Vikas discussed his problems with the ISAP facilitators and shared his concerns about learning. He was very convinced with the objectives of the program. The program was free of cost, and therefore garnered a lot of enthusiasm from the villagers in the age group of 18-35. So many people, along with Vikas joined this program that they normally couldn’t have afforded. The day he came to the training centre, Vikas was delighted to see that many other boys from his village would be taking the training together. In fact, they all felt that together they can make a great change in their future.

Being in the Tractor Operator Domain, he learnt maintenance of the machines, and many other related aspects; for instance, when to get the tractor serviced, which increases the life of a machine and thus improves the quality of work done by a huge machine with proper knowledge. He was quite happy with the training and skill he gained from the theory and practical lessons of the training program.

On successful completion of his training, Vikas started working inSonalika Tractor dealership in Panna District and earning a handsome salary of INR 7000/- per month as base salary and lots of incentives and perks on selling new tractors.

Today, Vikas has become a role model in his village for unemployed rural youths who showed strong determination towards his passion and became successful in his life. So, from Vikas’s life story we have to always believe in our passion which will lead us to success “It is your attitude, not your aptitude, that determines your altitude.”
